Come Arrest Me

Who are they and why should I give a damn?
They are Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki who need your help.

"On May 15th 2008, Greenpeace Japan used undercover investigators and the testimony of informers to expose the smuggling of large amounts of prime cut whale meat from the whaling ship Nisshin Maru, disguised as personal baggage, and labelled "cardboard" or "salted stuff" and addressed to the private homes of crewmembers. Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki intercepted one box, and discovered it contained whale meat valued at up to US$3,000. It was one of four such boxes sent to the same address. They took it to the Tokyo public prosecutor as evidence of embezzlement." - Greenpeace International

Instead of a full investigation promised by the Tokyo public prosecutors, Junichi and Toru were arrested on June 20th for stealing the box of whale meat. 40 police officers raided Greenpeace Japan office. They were arrested the same day the embezzlement case was dropped. Junichi and Toru will be put on trial early next year and face up to 10 years in jail for intercepting whale meat stolen by crew from the whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru and exposing corruption within the annual scientific research whaling programme which is believed to be politically motivated.

If the Japanese goverment are going to put whales defender who exposed corruption into jail, I'll be glad to join Junichi and Toru. Many people will.

Who have responded?
  • More than 250,000 Greenpeace supporters sent protest emails to the Japanese prime minister asking him to release the activists. And I am one of the quarter-million.
  • 35 international NGO which included Amnesty International, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Humane Society International have released a joint statement of concern issue to the prime minister.
  • A motion to release Junichi and Toru was passed in the Austrailan parliament and questions raised in the UK parliament.
So how about you? Stop Whaling for Good.

The phrase in the picture was formed by human bodies. If I was there with the other activists in Artic, they would have had a rounder exclamation mark!
